Got Hemorrhoids?

Got hemorrhoids? You're not alone! It is estimated that about 10 million Americans suffer from hemorrhoids each year. While they can occur at any age, they are most common in older adults, during pregnancy, with low fiber, and with prolonged sitting or straining on the toilet. 



So what exactly are these pesky little troublemakers? Hemorrhoids are just swollen veins in the rectum. When they get inflamed, they can often cause pain, swelling, and bleeding during bowel movements. They can make sitting downright unbearable. 



The good news is that simple lifestyle changes can help alleviate the symptoms and prevent hemorrhoids from getting worse. These tried and true natural remedies include: 



✔️staying hydrated


✔️eating a high-fiber diet


✔️considering stool softeners or fiber supplements


✔️avoiding prolonged sitting or standing


✔️ use a cushion when you do have to sit


✔️avoid straining during bowel movements


✔️doing sitz baths or soaking in warm water for 10-15 mins increments


✔️using over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream


✔️using witch hazel pads


✔️applying a cool compress for 10-15 mins increments


✔️engaging in regular physical exercise


✔️practicing good hygiene


✔️avoid harsh wiping- peri bottles are a good alternative!


✔️pelvic floor physical therapy



If your symptoms persist or become severe, it's best to consult with your healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. Medical interventions for severe hemorrhoids may include rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or infrared coagulation. For persistent or large hemorrhoids, a hemorrhoidectomy or stapled hemorrhoidectomy may be recommended. 



While hemorrhoids can be uncomfortable, painful, and embarrassing, they are generally not a serious medical condition and can often be managed with simple lifestyle changes and remedies. Early intervention and proper management are key to alleviating discomfort and preventing complication.
